Abstract | This research paper examines the institutional dimensions of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union, two of the most relevant regional integration processes in today´s world. As a descriptive case study, it looks in-depth at the role, composition, functions, and powers exercised by the European Parliament, as a democratically representative organ in the European institutional architecture, and draws a parallel to how and by which structures are analogous functions and powers exercised in the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It recognizes the existence of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly as a seed of a future parliamentary body within the context of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and studies different paths of possible development of this Assembly, exploring at the same time how the regional integration process in Southeast Asia can evolve to bolster the involvement of the citizens of this region in it. |
