Abstract | Five species of Calamus (rattan), C. caesius, C. longisetus, C. peregrinus, C. latifolius and C. godeforyi were grown in rubber plantations to study the growing possibility. Four years after growing, rattan still survived over 95%. The average stem increment of C. caesius was 1.8 metre per year in immature rubber plantation while in mature ruber plantation and natural forest was 1.0-1.3 and 0.6-1.2 metre per year respectively. The growth rate of C. longisetus, C. latifolius and C. godefroyi in immature rubber plantation was not different. The average growth of these species in immature rubber plantation was 1.3-1.6 metre while their average growth in the natural forest was 1.2-1.8 metre per year. The species C. peregrinus showed the lowest growth in this experiment. Growing of rattan four years before tapping did not affect the growth of rubber. |
