Abstract | The purpose of this research was to examine perceptions held by trainee translators regarding attributes translators should possess. The sample, obtained through purpose sampling, consisted of 67 students enrolled at Buriram Rajabhat University in a basic Business English Translation course during the second semester of 2019. Data collection tools consisted of questionnaires and interview forms developed from relevant literature. The results indicated that students held three perceptions related to translators’ characteristics in this order: 1) general knowledge (M = 4.38); 2) knowledge and ability of original and translated texts related to clarity, conciseness, and completeness (M = 4.25) and; 3) knowledge of translation theory and practice relative to translation principles (M = 4.20). Data from interviews indicated that good translators should love to read while being attentive to detail and should persist in translation work to produce quality translations rendering correct interpretations. The results of the research can be used to organize the teaching and learning in translation course by emphasizing on students or trainee translators to practice themselves to have good translators’ attributes. |
