Abstract | This study, The ChuichāI Dance of Female Roles in Traditional Thai Dance Drama, aims to examine and analyze the performance of ChuichāI dances as portrayed by female characters in traditional Thai dance drama. The research employed a qualitative methodology. Data were collected through video analysis of performances, interviews with expert practitioners, and a review of relevant academic literature. These data were then collectively analyzed, categorized, and interpreted to gain deeper insights into the characteristics and significance of ChuichāI dances in female roles. The findings identify 15 ChuichāI dance sequences, all sequences performed by principal or significant female characters. These dances serve three primary functions: 1. expressing pride in ornate and elegant costumes, 2. illustrating the transformation of a character into another role or identity, and 3. fulfilling other symbolic or narrative purposes. The dances are typically accompanied by a Wongpīphāt, the Thai musicals assemble. The accompanying lyrics are composed in traditional poetic structures such as ChuichāI and Mǣsī, either adhering to classical metrical structures or adapted for dramatic interpretation. In term of performer selection emphasizes a proportionate physique, refined beauty, expressive eyes, character-aligned demeanor, and—most importantly—advanced proficiency in Thai classical dance.Costumes fall into two main categories: (1) Chutyư̄nkhrư̄ang, a full set of costumes specifically worn by celestial or supernatural female characters, and (2) an attire reflecting the character’s social status within the narrative. The choreography draws on codified performance practices, including Ramthambot, Ram tī bot or Ramchaibot (All three specific words refer to the same meaning), performing choreographed movements aligned with narrative text, and incorporates standard forms from Ramphēlongchāphlēngreo (fundamental instructional routines in Thai classical dance), Rammǣbot (codified foundational dance sequences), Nātyasap (classical dance vocabulary or terminology), and phāsā thā (expressive movement language), all of which are creatively restructured to suit the character and dramatic context. |
