Abstract | Mucuna pruriens seeds are rich in protein, yet their use as a feed supplement has been restricted by the presence of anti-nutritional factors. This study investigated the proximate composition of pretreated; dehulled, soaked in bicarbonate of soda, and roasted Mucuna pruriens seed meal, and determined the effects of the pretreatment on haematological and zootechnical performance parameters when included in the diet of broiler chickens. Proximate analysis of the pretreated Mucuna pruriens seed meal was done according to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists to determine the moisture, crude protein, nitrogen-free extractives, crude fibre, fat and ash content. For the effects of protein digestibility, the determination of trypsin inhibitory activity was done in vitro using caseinolytic activity with commercial trypsin and casein as a substrate, and Mucuna pruriens seed meal extracts. Four different concentrations of Mucuna pruriens seed meal (0 %, 5 %, 10 % and 15 %) were used as representative samples for 0 g/kg, 50 g/kg, 100 g/kg and 150 g/kg M. pruriens seed meal respectively for the in vivo protein digestibility evaluation. The highest inhibitory activity was noted when trypsin was treated with 15 % Mucuna pruriens seed meal extract. Haematological and zootechnical parameters were evaluated in a 3 reps*4 diets completely randomized design on 36 Cobb 500 broiler chickens. The results showed a high level of crude protein of 328.7 ± 10.6 g/kg in pretreated Mucuna pruriens seed meal. All haematological parameters from the birds given graded levels of Mucuna pruriens seed meal were within the normal range. Growth performance parameters showed that the average daily gain obtained among the treatments was high in the 100 g/kg M. pruriens seed meal inclusion diet (129.45 g) whilst the 150 g/kg inclusion diet resulted in a lower average daily gain (79.21 g). Therefore, this study reports that at 100 g/kg inclusion level, pretreated M. pruriens seed meal can be used as a protein source in poultry feeds without deleterious effects. |
