| Abstract | Heavy metals pollution in soil has a significant impact on human health and soilenvironment. In this study, heavy metals; Cd, Pb, and Zn were evaluated in soils near fourfuel stations and four public streets in Basrah province. The concentrations of the Cd, Pb andZn were 1.59 – 2.88, 27.40 – 50.53, and 32.78 – 43.93 µg/g, respectively. The single pollutionindex is applied to know the pollution level of each heavy metal in soil. The results indicatedthat the quality grade of soil in all studied locations for Cd, Pb, and Zn was classified in heavypollution, potential pollution, and clean, respectively. Furthermore, the combined pollutionindex was applied to assess the comprehensive effects of the mixture of selected metals, andthe results indicated that the quality grade of soil in all studied locations ranged from middleto high. This means there is a high pollution of heavy metals in soil in all studied locationsdepending on the comprehensive evaluation for heavy metals in soil. The pollution indicesare useful tool in assessment soil pollution status by determining the levels of heavy metals insoil and which of them that are exceed the normal values and estimating the comprehensivepollution assessment of a mixture of several metals not a single one. This enables effectivedecisions in the environmental management to preserve soil and environmental health. |
