Abstract | This study aimed to determine the antidiabetic activity of Toona sinensis bark extract. Spectrophotometry was used tomeasure the inhibitory activity of ?-glucosidase. Its antidiabetic activity was determined in vivo. Phytochemical analysis showedthat the ethanol and water extracts contained flavonoids, saponins, and phenolic hydroquinones. In addition, alkaloids and tanninswere found in the ethanol extract. Inhibition of ?-glucosidase activity showed that the half maximal inhibitory concentrationvalues for the ethanol extract and water extract were 0.60 ?g/mL and 3.60 ?g/mL, respectively. Blood analysis revealed that adose of 150 mg/kg body weight (BW) of the ethanol extract reduced the blood glucose level by 70.8%. Meanwhile, glibenclamide (0.25 mg/kg BW) and 300 mg/kg BW of the ethanol extract decreased the levels by 69% and 52%, respectively. We concluded that the ethanol extract of T. sinensis has more potential as a herbal remedy at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW than at300 mg/kg BW. |
