Abstract | Overproduction of reactive oxygen species is involved in many diseases, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerativediseases, diabetes, cancer, viral and bacterial infections as well as osteoarthritis. Although antioxidant activity of Morus albaL. has been investigated in various parts of this plant, a little attention has been paid to the stems of this plant. Therefore,the present study was designed to systematically investigate the antioxidant activity of M. alba stem extract using variousin vitro antioxidant assay systems. The present data showed that the stem extract of M. alba exhibited a hydrogen-donatingability, an ability to quench hydroxyl radicals, having superoxide and nitric oxide scavenging activity as well as iron reducingcapacity. This study highlights the potential of this plant for further development as a natural source of antioxidant or as analternative treatment for oxidative stress-related diseases. |
