Title Effect of fluoride-releasing restorative materials on remineralization of adjacent proximal enamel carious lesion: a micro-CT study

Abstract Purpose: To investigate the ability of fluoride-releasing restorative materials to remineralize artificial proximal enamel carious lesions adjacent to the restoration.Methods: Fifty-four artificial enamel carious lesions (size 2x3 mm.) were created at the proximal surface of extracted premolar teeth. The baseline lesion depth and mineral density were determined by using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Then, all samples were randomly assigned to arrange in contact with four class II restorative material groups (Filtek Z350 XT™; FZ, Cention N®; CN, Fuji II LC®; FJ, Equia Forte®; EQ) and subjected to 14 days pH-cycling. Finally, post pH-cycling was measured by using micro-CT, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energydispersive x-ray (EDX). The difference in lesion depth and mineral density between groups wereanalyzed by using one-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Tukey multiple comparison test at p< 0.05.Results: The significant decrease in enamel lesion depth was found in all groups of fluoridereleasingrestorative materials (FJ, EQ, and CN). EQ demonstrated highest percent reduction oflesion depth. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference in percent reduction oflesion depth between EQ and resin composite (FZ). While the mineral density of adjacent enamelcarious lesions was significant increase in all material groups. However, there was no significantdifference in percent increase of mineral density between groups. From SEM-EDX, the Ca/P ratioof the remineralized enamel carious surface adjacent to the CN was comparable to those of theEQ, whereas the FJ had the highest Ca/P ratio.Conclusion: After 14 days of pH-cycling, fluoride releasing materials can reduce the progressionof lesion depth and increase mineral density of adjacent proximal enamel carious lesion. GICshave a tendency to provide superior remineralization than resin-based composites
