Abstract With the development of China, more and more Chinese language courses are offered at various schools in different countries; as a result, a large number of Chinese teachers are needed to teach Chinese language overseas. According to the actual situations these teachers face and the teaching experiences they encounter overseas, it is inevitable for these teachers to choose to use a medium language to help them in teaching Chinese in order to strengthen communication and promote students’ learning in the process of teaching. Because of its most obvious advantage as a global language, English has undoubtedly been chosen as the primary medium of instruction to help and promote Chinese language teaching. However, whether it is necessary to use English as a medium of instruction in teaching Chinese language becomes a widely practical issue for every overseas Chinese teacher. It has also become a concern how to use English as a medium of instruction effectively to help Chinese teaching. This study focused on investigating the use of English as a medium of instruction in teaching Chinese language at international schools in Thailand. The research firstly interviewed three native Chinese teachers to investigate their perceptions of the use of English in teaching Chinese. Secondly, observations of six teaching videos of those teachers were carried out and their purposes of using English in the classroom were identified. It was found that there were differences in the proportions of English use depending on different pedagogical purposes and that there are important factors, such as the selected textbooks, level of importance placed on Chinese language learning in different schools, teaching resources’ support and learning atmosphere, that affect teachers' perceptions on the use of English in their teaching. It is hoped that teachers currently working in Thai international schools can improve their teaching efficiency and effectiveness by considering the main conclusion drawn in this study and that Chinese teachers who wish to work in Thai international schools could benefit from the findings shown in this study as a reference to boost their career development in the future.
