Abstract In finding a business solution, a collaboration of domain experts is one of the global challenges in a multidisciplinary research group. Multidisciplinary knowledge is essential for solving complex business problems. Stakeholders or domain experts publish and share their knowledge from different backgrounds in order to solve those problems. For stakeholders to work together and efficiently describe and share their knowledge, they can use ontology as a formal knowledge representation. Ontology describes knowledge as a set of concepts and their relationships within a specific domain. Several frameworks have been implemented for ontology development. However, most of those frameworks lacks of collaborative capability, which is one the challenging task to support collaborative activities among different stakeholders (e.g. domain experts, knowledge engineers, application users, etc.) through the development cycle. This dissertation presents a collaborative environment with supportive features enabling multidisciplinary knowledge co-creation, called a community-driven ontology-based application management (CD-OAM) framework. The framework intends to detect existing polysemantic words in discussion contexts of the stakeholders and to suggest cross-disciplinary concepts to each discipline (e.g., environmental protection, economics, or sociology). In addition, the framework’s features provide crucial services: discussion forum for misunderstanding diagnosis, cross-domain concept detection, and ontology visualization. To show exploitation of the framework, a case study demonstrates a number of ambiguous terms arise within contexts of discussion underlying a sustainable development paradigm that involves three primary disciplines: environmental protection, economic growth, and social equity. The collaboration feature suggests the stakeholders by arising polysemantic words in discussion contexts, and then the ontology development feature detects cross-disciplinary concepts. Therefore, the main contributions of this research are providing a framework for detecting essential concepts that contain cross-disciplinary concepts and recognizing the stakeholder’s understanding of multidisciplinary knowledge.
