Abstract Telecommunications networks have evolved from the private service-specific network to the multi-service public infrastructure, providing a wide spectrum of arbitrary services and applications. The current Internet (IP) network can practically serve as such global-scale multi-service infrastructure where users can freely develop and deploy their own services and applications upon the Internet architecture. While Internet technology is exponentially growing, it needs changes to better support newer demands, especially, for service-specific QoS guarantee.Many researches have been done to realize such future Internet. Among them, the network virtualization approach seems to be a possible and practical way to provide better support for new (unknown) user demands without significant changes on the current Internet infrastructure, Virtual service networks (VSN) can be created to provide any arbitrary service network on top of one or more network infrastructures. Although VSN technology brings enormous advantages, it poses the reliability issues due to the common resources sharing mechanism in the recursive virtualization manner. That is, failures happened at the overlapped substrate resource can easily lead to the single-to-multiple-failures escalation problem at the target VSN if they are not well designed and managed.In this thesis, we investigate the problem of reliable VSN from different stakeholders perspective by exploring the solutions on each level of VSN architecture. Then, we try to fill the gaps to make the VSN realization as reliable as possible. In this work, we contribute two possible solutions. Firstly, we propose a novel reliability evaluation algorithm for the modern VSN in order to measure the magnitude of failures in terms of actual user perspective. It is intended for service providers to measure the reliability level of specific VSN inside multi-service network. As second solution, we propose a resource diversification method for VSN resource allocation. This is intended for virtual network providers, aiming to mitigate the higher possibility of single-to- multiple failures escalation problem inside modern virtual service network over the open substrate infrastructure. Based on the comparative and simulation analysis, both proposed solutions are effective in their respective problem domains. In addition, they are compatible with the other existing works to make the whole VSN architecture more reliable.
