This article explores semantic role as the primary mechanism governing the argument structure between the predicate and its constituents. Mastery of these roles is pivotal in demystifying the grammatical intricacies of Japanese—most notably case marker functionalism—which remains a persistent challenge for L2 learners. The discussion centers on the analysis of passive and causative constructions, elucidating their intrinsic link to the thematic hierarchy. Through the lens of agent-patient mapping, the study demonstrates how a semantic approach can effectively resolve ambiguities in particle assignment within syntactically complex environments.
